A Signed
Copy of The Ground at My Feet: Sustaining a Family and a Forest
Plus a 3 hour Outdoor Experience for up to (10) people
As we walk
through my family's forest above the Cowlitz River in SW Washington,
you will experience the entire life cycle of a forest and learn about
the history of this particular parcel of land. And you will be
nurtured by the forest.
I grew up
working in this 290 acre forest, planting and mulching trees and now
manages it with her sister-in-law and her octogenarian father. From
2003 and 2019, I taught at Parkrose Middle School and High School and
would love to show my beloved school community the forest.
We will
wander through newly planted seedlings, 10 year old stands of fir and
cedar, and an 8 acre stand of 125 year old trees we've set aside for
meditation and contemplation. You will see signs of deer, bear,
woodpeckers, porcupine, owls and other wildlife. We will forage for
berries, lovage and Miner's lettuce as the seasons permit.
You will
see the accommodations we're making in order to sustain trees in the
face of climate change. You will hear how the forest cleans water and
air while at the same time providing jobs for local families.
At the end
of the walk, we'll talk around a campfire and make s'mores.
The tree
farm is 65 miles north of Portland, just east of Toledo, WA.
